Can I stop wearing my plastic retainer after 6 months?
I know there's a load of questions regarding lost retainers on this thing, but everyone is different, so I thought I'd ask the question based on my details...
I was good wearing my retainer every day for about a week and every night for about 6 months, and I've lost the top part about 5 days ago. I've felt my teeth move a bit, but not that much.
To get a new retainer I'd have to get a new mold and make an appointment and I'm not really looking forward to it, especially considering my mum wasn't the most polite woman to the Orthodontist throughout my treatment.
I've heard that mouth guards wont work, but I need to make a new mold anyway, which will now be taken with my teeth slightly moved a bit, not taken from the original mold to move them back in place. So will a mouth guard just hold them at night in their position so they don't move anymore? Or should I seriously just man up and head back in there?
Man up and go back in. I have seen people who stopped wearing there retainers and their teeth are not pretty. They move back. Sometimes you can't even tell that they ever had braces. I wear a retainer on my bottom teeth which I have had for years. I usually wear it every other night (1 night on, one night off) and even then they move a tiny bit. So, it is best to just do what your Orthodontist says and wear it every night.
I don't think a mouth guard will do the job of a retainer, but while you are waiting for your new retainer, it wouldn't hurt to get a mouth guard I guess...
