I have a tetra whisper power filter for a 30 gallon tank and the tank is new.?
I wanted to know what I have to buy monthly tell me the product name and what the filter media for example the black sponge thing in front of the bio bag do I have to clean the bio bag wonder tube those kinds of things.
ok the black sponge you clean by rinceing with clear warm water the filter eliment you replace when the filter starts over filling at the fill tube
since this is a new tank you need to decide if you are going to do a fishless cycle (waste of time in my oppion) or cycle with one or 2 fish (my perfered method)
you will need a good gravel filter one of the best is the python system (about 35 dollars at wal-mart) it hooks to the sink and cuts down lugging buckits of water depending on where you live will determine how you deal with your water ic the water is chlornated then you will want to age it you do this by putting it into a container at least 24 hours before doing a water change so that the chlorine can leave the water
it is better to age the water than to use chemecials
if your going to have tropical fish you will need a heater if your going to have gold fish you wont.
when you first set your tank up do not add any fish for the first 24 to 48 hours if your doing a fishless cycle it will be 4 to 6 weeks before you add any fish
this is just the very basic start when cycleing with fish you only have 2 fish in the tank for the first 4 weeks
you change 25 to 50 percent of the water every two days for the first 2 weeks without touching the gravel
then the 3 and 4th week you do 25 percent every 3 days again not touching the gravel
if at any time the tank gets a white cloudiness to it do a 50 percent water change as this is ammonia and will kill the fish
during the first month watch feeding very carefully is best to feed once a day no more than what they can eat in 1 to 2 mins they will act hungry don't give in to much food will create more problems
after the first month you can increase feedings to twice a day
once the month has passed you can start adding fish I recomend adding between 2 and 4 fish depending on size
then wait 3 days to a week before adding more
